Today, I am going to explain the would grammar.
今日は、wouldの文法について説明していきます。
Would, should, and could grammar is something that many esl speakers struggle with.
Would, should, とcouldの文法は、多くのESL Speakers（英語を第二外国語として話す人）が苦労するものです。
Today, we will be focusing on would, but I will be breaking down the other two in future videos.
今日は、wouldに着目していきますが、今後のビデオで他の２つについても苦手克服していきます。
“Would” has a few different uses.
Wouldにはいくつかの異なる用途があります。
#1. Preference

The first one we will cover today is preference.
今日、最初に学んでいくのはpreference（好み）の用法です。
This means between a few options, it is showing which option you like the most, or the one you would prefer.
これは、複数の選択肢から、どれが一番好きか、あるいはどれが一番好みかということを意味します。
Let’s look at a few examples:
それでは例をいくつか見ていきましょう。

I’d rather eat pizza. (I would rather eat pizza.)
私はどちらかといえばピザを食べたいです。

I’d rather not. (I would rather not.)
私はどちらかと言えばしたくないです。
This sentence means, I don’t want to.
この文の意味は、「私はしたくない」です。
[Example #3]
I’d rather work at a hotel. (I would rather work at a hotel.)
私はどちらかと言えばホテルで働きたいです。
There are two main points here.
ここには２つのポイントがあります。
The first is that rather is used when expressing preference.
１つ目はwouldは好みを表す時に使われます。
You need “would rather”.
「would rather」が必要です。
The second main point is that, “I would” has a shortened form, I’d.
２つ目のポイントは”I would”には”I’d”の短縮形があることです。

It can also be used to just request what you want.
また、あなたがただしたいことを頼むときにも使われます。

I’d like water.
水が欲しいです。
This kind of phrase is often used to order at restaurants.
この種のフレーズは、レストランでの注文によく使用されます。
#2. Past habits

Another way we can use would is to express past habits.
使用できる別の方法は、過去の習慣を表現することです。
It is similar to the grammar, used to.
これは、used toの文法に似ています。
Let’s look at a few examples:
いくつかの例を見てみましょう。

When I was a university student, I would often eat pizza and ice cream.
私が大学生だったとき、私はピザとアイスクリームをよく食べました。
[Example #6]
When she was in Japan, she would often drink sake.
彼女が日本にいたとき、彼女はしばしば酒を飲んでいました。

When my sister was five, she would often watch Frozen.

As you can see, the words “often” and “when” are commonly used with this version of would.
ご覧のとおり、このバージョンのwouldではoftenおよびwhenという言葉がよく使用されます。
Let’s move on.

#3. Reported speech

The next way that we can use would is for reported speech. When we are relaying information we heard from another person.
wouldを使用する次の方法は、別の人から聞いた情報を中継する場合のreported speech（間接話法）です。
Let’s look at two examples.
2つの例を見てみましょう。

She said she would call me.
彼女は私に電話すると言った。
[Example #9]
He said he would come today.
彼は今日来ると言った。
#4. Past willingness

Another way we can use would is to express past willingness.
wouldを使用する他の方法は、past willingness(過去の意欲)を表現することです。
For this usage, it is the past tense of will.
この使用法では、過去形になります。
Most of the time it is negative. So it is would not or wouldn’t.
ほとんどの場合、ネガティブな事柄です。 だから否定形のwould not または wouldn’tを使います。
Let’s look at our examples.
例を見てみましょう。

My boss wouldn’t let me take the day off.
上司は休みを取らせてくれません。
[Example #11]
My father wouldn’t let me make the turkey.
父は私に七面鳥を作らせませんでした。
Let’s move on.

#5. Requests

We can use would for requests as well.
wouldは何か依頼する時にも使用できます。
For example:

Would you hand that to me?
それを私に渡してくれますか？
[Example #13]
Would you be willing to translate that for me?
それを翻訳してくれませんか？
Would is a polite way to request something.
Wouldは、何かを依頼する丁寧な表現方法です。
It has the same meaning as will or can requests, just more polite.
So saying “can you hand me that” has the same meaning.
だから、“can you hand me that”と言うのと同じ意味です
#6. If past, would + infinitive

We can use would with conditionals as well.
wouldは条件文（法）でも使えます。
There are two forms.
2つの形式があります。
The first one is would+infinitive.
最初の形式はwould + infinitiveです。
[補足説明]infinitive（不定詞）には「to不定詞」と「原型不定詞」があり、ここでは原型不定詞という意味です。
[Example #14]
If I was rich, I would travel the world.
私が金持ちだったら、世界を旅するだろう。
[Example #15]
If I had more time, I would practice dancing more.
もっと時間があれば、もっとダンスの練習をするだろう
Because it is a conditional, it is combined with if.
条件文のため、ifと組み合わされます。
#7. If past, would + have + past participle

The second form is would+have+past participle.
次の形式はwould + have + past participleです。
This is for a conditional in the past.
これは過去の条件を表現します。

If you called, I would have waited for you.
あなたが電話したら、私はあなたを待っていただろう。
[Example #17]
If I studied more, I would have scored higher on my TOEIC exam.
もっと勉強していれば、TOEIC試験で高得点を獲得できたでしょう。
#8. Wish + would

And last but not least, we can use would with wishes.
最後になりますが（これも重要で）、wouldは願望と一緒に使うことができます。

I wish I would have passed my exam.
試験に合格してたら良かったのになぁ。
[Example #19]
I wish he would stop being late.
彼が遅れることをやめれば良いのになぁ。
