Title: Responding to a client’s request
M: While I’m here, I’d like to change some of the details of the order I placed with you the other day. (※1) Is that still possible?
W: I’ll need to check whether your order has already been shipped. Do you know your reference number?
M: Yes, I’ve printed out a copy of my order confirmation e-mail.
W: It says on the printout that you ordered 100 E-18 microprocessors on Tuesday. (※2)
M: Yes, that’s correct. Is it too late to alter the order?
W: Let me look that up in our database for you. (※3) It seems that your order isn’t due to be dispatched until this afternoon, so there is still time to change it. (※4)
M: Fantastic. I’d like to order only 60 of the E-18 model, but also the same amount of the E-19. (※5)
W: Would you like those to be sent separately or combined into the same order?
M: I’d prefer to have them shipped as a single order, please. (※6)
W: In that case, I’m afraid that I’ll have to process it as a new order after cancelling the old one. (※7) Please note that this will result in some delay to the shipping of the order.
M: That’s not a problem. Can you tell me roughly when I can expect it to arrive?
W: The expected shipping date for orders received today is Monday next week, so your order should reach you by Wednesday at the latest. (※8)
ダイアローグの解説
【※1】 I’d like to change some of the details of the order I placed with you the other day.
この文の“you”は女性本人ではなく、女性の会社のことです。
【※2】 It says on the printout that you ordered 100 E-18 microprocessors on Tuesday.
“100 E-18”と数字が続いていますが、“100”は注文した個数で、“E-18”は製品の型番です。
【※3】 Let me look that up in our database for you.
“Let me look that up”の代わりに“I’ll look that up”と言うこともできますが、“Let me”（～させてください）を使った方が丁寧な表現になります。文中の代名詞“that”は男性の直前の発言全体を表しています。このように、直前の発言全体を表す場合は“it”ではなく、“that”を使います。“it”を使うのは相手の発言に出てきた一つの事柄に言及する場合です。例：“I’ve forgotten my order number.”(注文番号を忘れました。）“Okay. I’ll look it up in our database”（分かりました。データベースで調べますね。）上記の例の“it”は“order number”のことです。
【※4】 It seems that your order isn’t due to be dispatched until this afternoon.
この文では「注文が午後発送予定である」ことが否定文を使って表現されています。“your order is due to be dispatched this afternoon”とすることもできますが、否定文にすることで、「まだ発送されていない」という事実が強調されます。
【※5】 I’d like to order only 60 of the E-18 model, but also the same amount of the E-19.
“model”（型）は冠詞を必要とする名詞です。E-18という型は一つしか存在しないので、定冠詞の“the”を使います。同じ理由で“E-19”にも“the”がつきます。なお、「E-18を60個」という意味で文中では“60 of the E-18”と表現されていますが、このように“the”がつく名詞を数える場合には数字と“the”の間に“of”を入れます。
【※6】 I’d prefer to have them shipped as a single order.
“prefer”は「～の方が好ましい」ことを意味する動詞です。このことから、男性が「仕方がなければ別々の発送でも構わない」と考えているということが分かります。
【※7】 I’m afraid that I’ll have to process it as a new order.
“process it as a new order”の“it”は「E-18型とE-19型の注文」を表します。“it”の代わりに“that”を使うこともできますが、“that”を使うと強調的なニュアンスが出ます。この会話では最初から同じ注文について話しており、あえてここで強調する必要はないため、“it”が使われています。
【※8】 Your order should reach you by Wednesday at the latest.
“reach”は他動詞なので、「到着する」という意味で使う場合には必ず目的語をつける必要があります。この文での“reach”の目的語は“you”（あなた、あなたのところ）です。なお、“reach”と同様「到着する」という意味で自動詞の“arrive”を使うこともできます。この文を“arrive”を使って書き直すと、“Your order should arrive by Wednesday at the latest.”になります。
