Title: Helping a customer with a tax-free purchase
M: I’d like to buy this rice cooker to take back to Hong Kong. What do I have to do to get it tax-free?
W: First, I’ll need to check your passport, and then you have to fill in this form. (※1)
M: How much cheaper will it be once the tax has been deducted?
W: As a tourist, you don’t have to pay the consumption tax, which is 8 percent. We can also offer you an additional 5 percent off if you use your credit card.
M: That’s quite a substantial saving. Does the same discount apply to everything that you sell?
W: For general items like electronics, the tax deduction is only available if the total value of your purchases is more than 10,000 yen. For consumables such as food or cosmetics, the total price needs to be above 5,000 yen. Is there anything else that you would like to buy today?
M: No, I’m tempted, but I think I’ll just take the rice cooker. (※2)
W: Would you like us to deliver it to your hotel or to the airport?
M: Sending it directly to the airport would be great. How much would that cost? (※3)
W: It’s 1,300 yen per item for items weighing less than 10 kilograms. (※4)
M: That’s not too bad. Where do I collect it from at the airport? (※5)
W: The delivery company has a counter on the first floor of the international terminal. Show them your receipt for the delivery and they will give you your item.
ダイアローグの英文法
【※1】 You have to fill in this form.
fill inは書類などに「記入する」という意味の句動詞です。同じ意味でcompleteを使うこともできます。例：Please complete this application form. （こちらの申込書にご記入ください。）
【※2】 I’m tempted, but I think I’ll just take the rice cooker.
temptedは「誘惑する」ことを意味する動詞temptの過去分詞ですが、するつもりはなかったこと、またはしてはいけないことをしたい気にさせられた時に使います。会話文でピーターは、炊飯器以外の買い物をするつもりはありませんでしたが、大幅な割引があると聞いて他にも何かを買いたくなっているため、I’m temptedと言っています。しかし、結局は我慢しています。
【※3】 How much would that cost?
How much will that cost?ではなくwouldを使ってhow much would that cost?と言っているのは、まだ配達サービスを使うと決めていないからです。つまり、この文のwouldは仮定的な状況を表しています。
【※4】 It’s 1,300 yen per item for items weighing less than 10 kilograms.
less than 10 kilogramsが表す範囲は「10キロ未満」で、10キロは含まれていません。10キロを含む場合はno more than 10 kilograms（10キロ以下）、または10 kilograms or less（10キロまたは10キロ未満）という表現を使います。
【※5】 Where do I collect it from at the airport?
この文では、Where would I…ではなくWhere do I…という表現が使われています。これは、配達サービスを使うと決めているためで、(3)のようにまだサービスを使うと決めていない場合はWhere would I…と言うことができます。
